How it Works

How does Advil and ibuprofen really work?

  • Advil is an ibuprofen-based pain relief brand that has products to relieve pain and inflammation for adults and children. Advil’s products come in different solid and liquid formats such as tablets, liquid capsules, liquid suspension, and chewable tablets to suit various preferences across ages. Advil is used to relieve many common aches and pains such as headaches, muscle pain, back pain, dental pain, period pain and more.

  • The active ingredient in Advil is ibuprofen. Ibuprofen belongs to a class of medicines known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Ibuprofen-based NSAIDs like Advil are commonly used to manage pain and inflammation (swelling and redness) associated with some common types of musculoskeletal disorders, and treat non-inflammatory conditions such as headaches, migraine and period pain, and to reduce fever.

  • Chemicals in the body called prostaglandins produce pain and fever. Ibuprofen, the active ingredient in Advil, blocks the body's production of these prostaglandins, therefore reducing pain and fever.

  • With the exception of Advil 12 Hour, the appropriate dose of Advil generally provides up to 4-6 hours of effective pain and fever relief. If the recommended dose does not provide adequate relief, do not exceed the recommended dose of Advil and do not take additional pain relievers without first consulting a healthcare professional.

Advil 12 Hour Extended Release Tablets, designed with dual-layer technology, generally provides effective relief of persistent pain for up to 12 hours with just one tablet.

  • Both Advil and Nurofen contain the same active ingredient, ibuprofen. Ibuprofen belongs to the class of medicines known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
