So let’s talk for a moment about what pain is. Any injury, pressure or stress that could potentially damage the body causes pain impulses to be sent to the brain via the spinal cord. If the tissues are actually damaged a group of pain causing chemicals are released at the site of the pain and attach themselves to nerve endings. These pain causing chemicals significantly increase the strength of the pain signal to the brain. They can also cause inflammation in the surrounding tissue. The presence of these chemicals at the site of the pain means you may also experience swelling, increased heat at the site of the pain, and redness in the surrounding tissue.
